How the system works
This list should give you an idea of the steps involved in creating high quality reproductions from your originals. You may be surprised by the steps we take to ensure you are 100% delighted with the result.
First Contact…
Obviously, the first step is taken by you when you contact us and start asking all sorts of questions about how it all works. Hopefully this page and the entire site will answer the majority of your questions to the point that when you see us for the first time you are simply excited enough to jump straight in and start making things happen!
Tell us what you’d like…
You bring in an original piece of art, several pieces would be better and we will sit down with you and find out what your needs and expectations are. We’ll discuss pricing, sizes, substrates and anything else that might pop up. Obviously if you are not able to visit us due to distance then we can chat by phone or email first then you can send your originals to us. When we’ve seen the work we’ll contact you again to confirm what we’ve discussed or make alternative suggestions if need be.
Once you are happy we’ll move on to the next step but to be right up front with you, we are going to ask for some money at this point. Our terms require that you pay half the order total for us to move on to the next step which is…
Photographing the Artwork…
The most critical part of the whole process – the photography of your art. We use an amazing piece of equipment – the only one of it’s kind in Australia, which is a cross between a camera and a scanner. This camera is hand-made in Germany and uses Schneider Lenses, the best in the world. It provides us with a whopping 570megabyte file from a 100 megapixel sensor. This means that we can reproduce large originals faithfully capturing every minute detail – it’s amazing!
Preparing the digital files…
Now we’ve captured your image we go the process of ensuring the digital file will print on the substrate of your choice to the best possible colour match. This first involves sizing your image – we always save the master file so that it is the same size as your original or larger if required. We then colour balance it and make a test print. This is then compared to the original and adjustments are made until we are satisfied that we’ve achieved the best result. We then make an A4 proof print for your approval. We normally allow a turnaround time of three-four days for this step.
Your approval…
It’s up to you now to approve the proof. once you are happy and you’ve signed off on the test then we can go to print with your order as planned. This will involve resizing the image if an alternate size is chosen, adding borders and printing on your choice of substrate. If you are having canvas reproductions you may want a gallery wrap or coloured border printed around your image – if not then canvas will usually have a two inch (5cm) white border of canvas for stretching.
Printing your order…
The printing of most orders is completed in about three days. Once we’ve printed it we will do a quality check on each print. At this point, paper reproductions are finished but if your order is on canvas then we need to allow 12 hours drying time before we coat them with a liquid UV inhibiting protective laminate. This takes another 12 hours for proper curing. We recommend that paper prints are not framed behind glass for at least 24 hours after printing because of outgassing, essentially the final drying of the inks. So now they are ready for collection or delivery. It is at this point that final payment is required.
Time to make some money…
Time to start selling your wares! This is basically the end of the Giclee production process and the start of something even more exciting – the Money Making Process! From now on it’s up to you to decide how to promote the work. You can list the work online with us, list it on your own web site, promote it to your current outlets, galleries, framers, shops etc. We will also list your work in our catalogue which is shown to the general public, interior designers, homeware stores, framers and print shops. It is important to note that we are primarily a production house, not a shop-front type retail sales outlet so for the highest degree of success you need to get out there and make things happen yourself – you’ll make more money this way too!
Sold out? you’ll need to re-order…
OK things are going well for you and you’ve just about sold out of your first batch of Giclees – exciting stuff! If you’ve done your homework and priced the work properly, you’ve made a tidy profit but don’t stop there, it’s time to re-order.When you receive your first order we will provide you with all the information you need to be able to re-order your images.
Security of the digital files…
A major concern of every artist is the security of their image. How do you know we won’t just go ahead and print hundreds of your images and sell them without you knowing? Simple answer – You don’t. You have to rely on our integrity and honesty to do the right thing. The fact that if we did do it and you caught us you could sue us into the next century is a good enough deterent for us NOT to do it. We haven’t been in business for all these years to throw it all away with a stupid stunt like that. We are photographers ourselves and are fully aware of copyright laws and support them to the hilt. We wouldn’t want our work copied by anyone else so we won’t do it to you.
We take the security of your images very seriously and to that end we archive your files the safest way we know how. We alway keep the original untouched scan backed up to DVD, we keep our working file on site so we can complete your orders as efficiently as possible and we keep a back-up copy in a secure location off the premises. Digital imaging is both exciting and frightening from a security point of view. In the old days of negatives you only had one negative – if it got damaged, the show was over – end of story! The down side with modern technology is that you must be very careful who you supply even small digital files to. Too many artists have had their work copied without permission and rarely do they catch the culprits. Don’t let this put you off – if you failed to take advantage of what Giclee reproductions can give you on the off chance that something bad might happen then you are missing the boat. I reckon you’ve got more chance of having a car accident.
We get an order for your image – what happens now?
What happens when we sell one of your images from our Online Shop or out of our catalogue? First thing we do is contact you to see if you have one in stock. If not, you will need to authorize us to print an order for you. When you first put your work into production, both us and you signed an authorization form which covered several points – one being that you were the copyrighted owner of the image and another being that we won’t make any reproductions without permission from you. If you have stock we will make arrangements for you to either deliver the work to us or directly to the customer. If we need to print more then the new work will need to be signed by you before delivery. This takes time so in order to keep clients happy it’s always a good idea to make sure you have at least a couple of each image in stock.
