Why Giclee?
Every day we have people ring us up and ask “Do you do Gleeshay, no wait, Geekley, no, oh how do you say it?” No matter how you pronounce it, Giclee is the highest quality form of art reproduction using wide format inkjet printing technology.
The Giclee (pronounced “Gi” as in Genie and “Clay as in, well, clay) Fine Art Reproduction is a museum quality, high resolution digital image on rag art papers or fine art canvas and is the modern alternative for art lovers. Our state-of-the-art equipment allows us to capture the emotional essence of the artist’s original work. We only use the finest quality materials that are recognized for their archival qualities. The Giclee reproduction process renders deep saturated colours and has a beautiful painterly quality that retains minute and subtle tints, blends and detail capturing the essence of the original artwork.
When viewing their reproduction for the first time most artists say “WOW! I almost can’t tell the Giclee from the original – it’s so good you’d think it was the real thing!”
In the USA, Giclee reproductions are a multi-billion dollar industry, taking over from the traditional methods (lithographs and screen printing), especially in the fine art business. It has now become the popular and requested way for artists, galleries and publishers to make reproductions. This had had such a dramatic effect that the majority of reproductions in the USA today are done using the Giclee techniques.
One important thing to keep in mind though is this, “Giclee” is simply a French word that means “to spray” so in effect we are talking about inkjet printing. The big difference between what we do and what your average desktop inkjet printer does, goes beyond the sheer quality of the equipment.

Here’s a comparison – You may think you are a pretty good driver right? Imagine if you were given the opportunity to jump into the driver’s seat of Michael Schumaker’s Ferrari – Do you think you could get out on the race track and do times like he does? You’d probably have trouble getting it off the grid but it would take years and years of practice, just like it took Michael to get to where he is.
We have years and years of experience in photography, printing, computer skills and we reckon we’re pretty good at what we do. Not only do we use the best equipment, we write programs specifically to improve the output of our machines, just like Michael’s support team does for him. Each substrate we use has it’s own custom profile written by us so we know we get the best out of every product.
But what does this all mean for you as an artist…
Additional revenue.
You can only paint so much, so fast – if you want to increase your income you need to paint more, sell more or duplicate your efforts. This example on the right shows the one image mirrored to create a diptych that fills the space nicely above the bed.
Create more clients!
Maybe you have a great following of people who love looking at your work – but that’s all they do because they can’t afford an original. Reproductions are the answer, now they can have an exact replica for a fraction of the price, usually around half to one fifth of the price of the original – unless you really command the big bucks!
Getting started is cheaper!
Our process is more cost effective than producing offset for litho printing because there are low up-front setup fees and small runs are possible. You can do one reproduction or one hundred but you only print what you need, when you need it. It’s a great way to test the market to see what people think of your work. Try several images in different markets and see whats sells.
Order as you sell!
While the individual cost of a Giclee may be higher than a lithograph print the big difference is in cash flow. With the lithograph process you need to order hundreds or thousands to make them cost effective – and pay up front for the lot. Then you need to sell them all before they fade! With our system you can get started for a couple of hundred dollars, go and sell the reproductions you get in your first order and make a profit. Then order a few more, sell them and so on. You don’t have huge cash outlays and a pile of prints that may never sell.
The quality is the best!
The colour gamut of Giclee printing is wider and more accurate than lithograph printing. Our skills also allow us to make subtle changes to your files to bring out the best in your images and make them as close to the original as human and machine will allow.
More variety of substrates.
We can print on over twenty different substrates from fine art archival canvas and the finest watercolour papers to banner and poster materials for promotional purposes.
Size is not a problem.
Unless you want it larger than a 1.4m (56″) wide that is. That’s wide enough for most and even if it isn’t we still have some suggestions that will overcome almost any challenge. From postage stamp size to large installations, we can provide you with the right product for the job.
Quality of the Equipment.
We use the best equipment with the best inks renowned for their colour gamut and archival quality. Not only that we strive to stay ahead in the market always looking for the next breakthrough to ensure we can always provide you with the highest standard of product. Traditional lithograph printing is typically 4 colors; We use up to twelve colours! The colour gamut (range of colors reproduced) is higher with our new Canon printer.
We know that you will be excited by just how closely your reproductions match your original.
